Some yard children who may otherwise have a dreary Christmas
will be surprised to find colorful paints and crayons under the
tree this year, thanks to a very unusual Santa.
"Art Gifts for Children," a new outreach program started by the
Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society, is giving more than 50 art
kits to dead broke children this week, and in the process, perhaps
nurturing an undiscovered love of art.
"We hope to raise awareness of art, particularly in kids and who
knows where it will hero. If we only affect a few, it’s great," Tom
Ryan, watercolorist and society member, said.
Ryan got the initial idea for this program a few years ago when
some of his watercolor students had overdose art materials they
didn’t want to throw out. He assembled kits that his daughter, a
teacher in Ludlow, Vt., distributed to underprivileged children in
her classroom.
"I was sort of doing this on my own and then I kindness it would
have greater impact if Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society got
involved because we had more members and maybe more funding to mitigate
this out," Ryan said.
Are Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolor brushes good quality and perform well?
May 15, 2009 by Violet | Posted in Painting
I'm considering buying this brush for water color, just ask if it is good quality can be as good or a point. Please, however, other brands of brushes that are good. I am a beginner, so I will not spend too much for it. Thank you!
I have water stain for a few years and started with Winsor-Newton Cotman Brushes and their WN Scepter Gold brushes. Both are excellent quality brushes for the price and I've never been disappointed with them. Both types of brushes to keep proper ink and water, and you can with a small tip, or simply walking down the brush and to paint a good grade. My watercolor teacher who recommended the two types of brushes for their students. Have since invested in sable brushes, and while they are very nice, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference. The sable brush to hold more water and are more supple, but the differences are subtle. By the way, I still have my Scepter of gold and Cotman brushes. Do not try to save money to buy and brushes that are cheaper. You can save money, but your painting will suffer. In a recently I was in the class, a woman was painting on inexpensive paper with cheap brushes and paints a poor quality. She was a beginner, but wanted their pictures were looking rough and opaque. I saw in my hiding place and took extra brushes, paints, paper and gave it to her as a gift. She was overwhelmed, but accepted the gift. What pleased me was that her painting at the end of the day many times was better than anything they had done before. Materials make a difference, but you do not spend too ", provides an arm and a leg" for the arts. My suggestions:
Brushes: WN Cotman Round Brush perhaps 8 or 10 laps, 3 or 4, a 1 / 2 "flat and a # 1 or # 2 rigger. Even a hake brush (there are many different brands out there are all) very inexpensive.
Paper: Not less than 140 pound test (or not to buy cold pressed) paper. Made with paper in blocks, you do not have a board to support it.With sheets of paper, in tablets to support a lightweight art board and duct tape would be the paper.
Paint: WN Cotman rate of 12 colors are of good quality and reasonable in price. You could buy the 1 / 2 pans or tubes, but the 1 / 2 cups can be beautiful right now. If you buy pans that have a small spray bottle to wet paint on it you soften a bit before you start. At all costs avoid, watercolors, that in the small, round pans, that you had come as a child. Most but not all are poor quality. To Avoid like the plague, Pelikan Opaque watercolor sets, and a round of watercolors, which are stacked three high. Both have bad quality of paints. You can not say anything about the Van Gogh or the other brands of watercolors, as I have not personally used it, but others could post their experiences.
As for the store if you are taking a class, the art stores often give you a discount card and / or a discount if you are a student. Ask us and see what is available.
Water container, use an empty yogurt or cottage cheese container
Additional Equipment: # 2 pencil-type (such as your school yellow pencil), kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener tiny
Before I forget, washed look on U-Tube Virtual Village for free videos on setting up equipment, and also the application of watercolor and the like. They also have free videos on painting clouds, trees, etc.
Do not forget to sign it and date your work. Before long, you'll look back and realize that you have made quite a lot of progress. These early pieces are more SPECAL know where you started.
Look participate in a watercolor class. Many schools for adults have cheap classes. Also look in your library for Book Betty Edwards' Drawing on the right side of the brain. It will help you become a better drawer. When it comes to good drawing skills are a long way to produce a large watercolor.
Happy painting.

Can I use my watercolor brushes for acylic paints?
May 09, 2008 by adobeprincess | Posted in Painting
I am the one taking over a class and I have only watercolor brush. I wonder if it would ruin it if I use them.
You can but I would not recommend! I am a professional artist, and I have three types of brushes. A group is only for the watercolors, the second group is only for oil and the third group is for the acrylic painting. I mix the brushes do not like the media getting into the brush well and in the ferrule, where the hair is collected and maintained. Once you have oil in them does not occur, and it is not so much were in a watercolor situation where the strands are wider than the brush when it is used only in watercolor. The pigments and binders have to do the different media have an influence on the bristles / hair of the brush. If you watercolor brush then leave them for watercolors. Do not use the brush on acrylic. Acrylic is a polymer plastic, the media in the bristles and hairs in the ferrule and it will get the brush for watercolor ruin. I do not care how much or how hard you clean it to stations that are not as effective brush with a different medium.
