Finalists in national portrait competition on display at Waddington's in Toronto

TORONTO — The 30 finalists for the 2009 Kingston Rate highly portrait competition, including the winning painting by Andrew Valko of Winnipeg, will be on display at Waddington's Auctioneers from Jan. 8 to 19.

There were 471 entries from across the mother country. Valko won the $10,000 award for his painting "Personal Surveillance," in which a young man is shown turning a video camera on himself.

The two runners-up were Allan Harding MacKay of Kitchener, Ont., for "Anuta in Morose" and Fiona Ackerman of Vancouver for "Distraction."

The prize, inaugurated in 2005, is a biennial national competition for synchronic portraits of Canadians by Canadian artists. Organized through the Kingston (Ont.) Arts Council, it is similar to portrait prizes in Australia, New Zealand, Britain and the U.S.

The touring offering will later appear at the Art Gallery of Calgary, from Jan. 29 to April 17. It has previously been to Kingston and Wolfville, N.S.

At each peregrination location, visitors vote for a people's choice winner.

Can someone recommend at famous portrait painting to discuss at a Writing Class?

It is not the Mona Lisa. Published critique / analysis of the image must exist. The task is to present a portrait painting as a masterpiece and explain why this is so.

I've never been a history of art class and I'm totally drawing blank. Can anyone help?

The New York Time said that portraiture is again making popular with the rich. I ask, why not among the ordinary people?

Among the rich, it is continuing the family tradition continues. After your portrait hangs beside Papa, Papa, and grandchildren, etc. Afterall, the camera has only been around 150 years ago, rich people with big egos have been to many more.

From the perspective of art, which he no longer applicable. The art is the direct transmission of feelings (good and bad), a much higher goal than the simple transmission of light and shadow information. The portraits are ready now are crisp photo realistic, and if that is the case, why not a camera?

Well, if the artist chooses his feelings (and not paint as a strict image) a person who may enter this back to another area, such as Impressionism and Expressionism done in their time.

Likewise a photo or one person can be art too. Probably not a traditional portrait, but something that the feelings can be just as valid as ART taught.
