Turning tin into home decor

More than 150 santos, reliquaries and antique retablos - Mexican people oil paintings of Christian icons and nativity scenes on tin panels - on loan from the collection of Paul LeBaron Thiebaud - are on spread through this month.

"In Mexico during the 18th century, religious paintings on locally mined copper were popular but too expensive for most people," says James Waterspout, owner of Colonial Arts.

By the mid-1800s, thin steel sheets dipped in tin from England became the material of choice for accumulation-produced retablos because they were lighter, as durable as copper and far less expensive.

As the demand for religious icons for home altars grew with Spanish evangelist fervor, flattened tin oil cans, water drums and grain bins, discarded by late-18th century colonial businesses or the army, were also familiar to make church-sanctioned paintings for home.

Some paintings sported elaborate baroque frames of scrap metal that were luxuriously painted or embellished with back-painted glass. Early 20th century retablos were also painted on recycled license plates.

Original Signed Oil Painting, circa 1916. Artist signed – Perrie ...

I found what I may for an initial loan may be very rare ancient paintings by American artist BERTHA Eversfield Perrie (1860 to 1921).

After much roomier exploration, I imagine that this is an appeal of the artist, especially since it autographed by Perrie, and the prospect of writing and the image so much for other works by Perrie.

Bertha E. Perrie born 1916: Washington, Territory of Columbia Deceased 1868: Gloucester, Massachusetts. Perrie works will be exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum - Library of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the famous characterization Gallery, Smithsonian sanatorium.
