Glamour? Bling it on
26.12.09
Basking in bling isn't unprejudiced for fashionistas. Fashion-forward homes also are starting to show some flash and dash as glam style takes off as a top head.
But you don't have to redo your house in glitter to get the look.
The dramatic balance of light, texture and scale speaks of snazzy comfort in a room. Think reflective surfaces, luxurious fabrics and muted tones or black and oyster-white contrasts. Think Hollywood of the 1930s and the languid sensuality of Myrna Loy and Mae West. Think of sparkling decor and discourse.
As in the '30s, an budgetary downturn makes people yearn for the finer things in life. Transforming a home into a luxe levant from drab reality is an easy, affordable dream. But the look isn't that of the brash and brassy '80s. It is understated sumptuousness.
"When times are a bit more glum, people want some sparkle,"
said Jennifer Teeple, owner of Red Razberry Contemplate Group. "People want a soft escape, to forget what's outside, especially at this time of year. Certainly chandeliers are making a big comeback, and rich lacquered mirror frames. You don't want to do a whole room, just small amounts."
