Large Japanese maples can provide wonderful colors

I've been calligraphy about tiny Japanese maples recently in response to reader questions.

I must admit that weeping lace-leaf types and perpendicular, tiny-leaved types are amazingly beautiful in the garden. But I insist that the full-sized, 15- to 20-footers can be even more spectacular. That's singularly true in fall when they take on amazing colors on distinctive leaves.

I just felt the need to say how awesome the larger trees are lest you mistakenly go bankrupt to consider their quality and beauty in deciding what to plant in your landscape.

I also insist that while 'Bloodgood' remains a beautiful, prominently, maple, there is a world of diversity that includes lighter colors, unique leaf shapes and variegation that includes pink, deathly white, orange or green or endless combinations of these colors and others.

If you lack to keep it, the best additive is warm water. Keep the bowl under the tree filled with water. Use water that is just above room temperature.
