FireWire Vs USB: Which Is Faster?

But ubiquity doesn't not equate to superiority. All other areas of comparison aside, what many people want to know is how the two technologies match up in terms of race. USB 2.0 has a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 480 Mbps, versus 400 Mbps for FireWire 400 and 800 Mbps for FireWire 800. To get a meaning of real-world performance, however, we ran drive tests on both a 2.4GHz 17-inch MacBook Pro with a 160GB, 5400RPM internal hard drive and a Mac Pro 3GHz 8-substance system with a 250GB, 7200RPM internal drive (each with OS X 10.6.2 and 2GB of RAM installed).

Western Digital My Book Studio

When we connected the MacBook Pro to a 2TB Western Digital My Earmark Studio drive and copied a 1GB file to it from the internal hard drive, we found that it took 23 percent less time over FireWire 400 than over USB 2.0. Duplicating that document using FireWire 400 on the WD drive took 10 percent less time than when run over USB 2.0. To see how the different connections performed in more customary backup tasks, we copied over a 2.5GB folder containing 5000 individual files and folders. In that probe, we found the FireWire 400 transfer to be 26 percent faster than USB 2.0. Using AJA's System Test application, we found the MacBook Pro's FireWire 400 influence to be 46 percent faster than USB in the writing tests. In the reading tests, however, the edge went to USB, which was nine percent faster than FireWire 400.

External hard drive question. How do you change which drive it is on when you connect to your computer?

I have an external DVD burner, external hard drive and a 1GB USB memory stick that I disconnect plug and regularly on my computer. But Everytime I plug it into the hardware is everytime on different disks. For example, some times when I plug-in is the external drive is now on the F: drive then the next time it will be on the E: drive, and sometimes on the G: drive.

Is there any way I can stay Permantly put it on a all the time, even after I separate them? Can I plug it back in and have it pop everytime on the same drive?

The reason I ask is all my requirements for certain programs run (ieitunes etc. ..) a, to a certain drive. When I plug it back into the drive and then changing the default values have become corrupted.

I know its confusing, but anyhelp would be appreciated.

ITS NOT THE ORDER I PLUG IN THEM EITHER. SOMETIMES THE Q: POP UP DOESN'T EVEN IF I plug in the Memory Stick.

Simple answer:
Right-click My Computer, click Manage
Expand Drive Management
Connect the external drive
Right click the volume in drive management, and then select Change drive letter.
Change it to what you want.
I would be in every device you have, plug, so you can see what each drive letter assigned to each external device. If a drive has already been allocated to the letter you need, then change the first drive letter, then change the other device letter.
You can also regedit, go to HKLM \ System \ MountedDevices
This is a list of device IDs, and drive mappings, only the right mouse button on the enrty, click Rename, and change the drive letters and not forget: According AND DO NOT CHANGE YOUR SYSTEM C: drive letter unless you want A nice BSOD 7b on the next boot. Restart for the changes to the registry to take effect. Change Log makes em stick better, but you can hose, if you delete or rename it something wrong. Make a system restore point first start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore
Good luck!

My external hard drive made my laptop crash and not start. Any ideas on how to help?

I put in my old external hard drive (5 + years old) in my 1.5 years old laptop for the first time this morning and it crashed my computer. Now I can not even have the computer on, even though the battery is fully charged.
Anybody have any ideas? If I do not plug this external drive into another computer over and over?

Some drives will only work properly when you restart the computer, then connect the drive after booting the computer to complete. Nor is it compatible with the new operating system.

Come see our website for your disk, whether an update to the firmware to make it compatible with newer operating systems. Check also the website of the compatibility of your operating system to see if the drive is displayed.

You may need to plug it into an older computer to save the data and copy them to a new hard disk or directly to your new computer.
