Treasures: A tapestry to feel and see

Darling Helaine and Joe: I saw your piece on double-weave coverlets and have enclosed a picture of a tapestry from my husband's family that is stamped "France" on the back. Would you have any report on this piece? Thank you. -- J.W.S., Marion, Va.

Dear J.W.S.: Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris -- known to the society as Le Corbusier -- is one of the pioneers of modern architecture and the International Style, and he once called tapestries "nomadic murals." The objective was that the nobles and the very wealthy of days gone by would customarily roll up their tapestries and take them whenever they moved from one residence to another.

That is because these woven textiles were not only smashing to observe but were also used to cut down on wintertime drafts, hopefully keeping the interior of the residence warmer and cozier than it might have been otherwise. Tapestries have been around for thousands of years, and examples of Greek tapestries have been found that steady old-fashioned to the third century B.C.

How can you clean an old tapestry?

I have an embroidered tapestry of my mother arose prior years. He recently survived Hurricane Ivan, but was drenched in rain and unprotected for several weeks. It is dirty, probably moldy, and some of the colors have seeped into adjacent areas. The backing fabric have also deteriorated. The local cleaners refuse to touch them.
Any suggestions?
Mike D.

My wife takes her needles in the cleaning, if it is to work on them before putting them behind glass.
Ask them if you have a signed waiver (release it) of everything, they will do it. Unless it's really a shame that it falls apart.

The Other Side of the Tapestry

The Other Side of the Tapestry

St. Paul, Minnesota, February, 1979 ...
