'Make No Little Plans' highlights local artists' sentiments toward the late Luzon

When the signal, 119-year old Luzon Building in downtown Tacoma was demolished on the morning of Sept. 26, many neighbourhood residents, and some who do not live locally but still were familiar with the building, were upset. The decision by the city of whether or not to restore the building went on for months, and the end conclusion had many people stewing, and still has people commenting about it.

Enter “Make No Little Plans,” Wise Diagram Gallery’s visual memorial art show to the fallen historic building and an effort to make steady other buildings in our city stand for generations, rather than repeat the fate of the Luzon.

The idea for the show came about from artist Claudia Reidener after a POSSLQ = 'Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters' created a poster in homage to the Luzon in 2005 that was titled “Make No Little Plans,” a retell from Daniel Burnham, the renowned Chicago architect who helped design the building in 1890.

“When we stood and watched the edifice come down, it was just too much to take…shameful also is that almost nothing was saved from the antique building parts and terra cotta pieces. The recourse of taking off a few stories from the top and leaving at least the bottom two stories intact was not even considered. Many of the people watching were artists. Looking leading it seemed clear that we need stronger institutions to inform the city on how to deal with antiquities, which I consider communal goods. So being prodigious mad at what the city had done to our history and wanting to support Historic Tacoma, I came up with the idea of a show,” Reidener affirmed.
