1985

Who created it?

Doug Hyde

What is it?

Stone sculpture

Background:

Experience next to the front desk in the lobby of the downtown Chandler Community Center is a 5-foot stone sculpture by New Mexico-based artist Doug Hyde. The area depicted in Flute Player is reminiscent of stories told to Hyde by his elders while growing up.

Hyde is a by birth of Hermiston, Oregon. His work is influenced by his Nez Perce, Assiniboine and Chippewa ancestry as it was relayed to him by his grandfather and other relatives. They taught him legends of zoological characters and other aspects of his heritage.

While attending the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M., Hyde conscious with Apache sculptor Allan Houser. In 1967 he left Santa Fe to attend the San Francisco Art Institute but only stayed there a concise time before enlisting in the Army. During his second tour of duty in Vietnam, he was wounded by a grenade. During his recuperation from that offence, he learned to use power tools to cut and shape stone at a friend's tombstones business.

What is considered good art and by whose standards?

I make a study written on "Faith and Reason" by Pope John Paul II. Tonight we were talking about objectivity and subjectivity. The art was used in the example to discuss their own perceptions of good and bad art and the general perception of it. I am confused with the object of art. Personally, I think, good and bad art is, his own personal opinion.

Can someone explain to me what "good art"? How Michelango, Picasso and Van Gogh in comparison to modern art? And by whose standards of "good art" classified as such?

I have never been an art class, I draw only privately once in a while, but I do not consider myself an artist. What books or Web sites I can go to learn about art?

Good art is art, painted during the Renaissance artist! Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Raphael, as well as excellent examples of good art! they are the kind of art that would like to see the people who apppreciate, where the time was into it, because there is always an issue, where the colors and techniques begin with the changing times, where you actually look like a painting, and vary interpret what he or she sees, because it looks so realistic and human like! Good art has the high expectations and no less, and take Michelangeo and the Sistine ceilin, and a comparison with Picasso's not that I have anything against him!Michelangelo shows expressions, emotions, light, darkness has had a fresco on the dome of the chapel as well as an issue for him and nailed him! anything if it appears in its place, as if realistic, are still vivid pastel colors, change the themes and the mystery is still there. Picasso, on the other side as well as other modern artists consider art, with some paint and threw it several times to the canvas or making copies of the Mona Lisa's face in color!I call that a kid's work that I, because it can give my brother and his friends, some paint and canvas, and they could come with the same material, the so-called "artists" with the same things, or better still to come! Art in today's society especially good art is what the Europeans have in their museums like the Louvre and d'Orsay and Versailles! art, good art to be more precise because it does not do something in a hurrty, but with elegance and class!that is what separated the two arts: good art has more class that during the modern art not, and indeed the art of art from society and its norms, as always, defined!
